instant weekend, part 1

Happy April!

My friend A just started a new job, and was in need of a new work wardrobe, so she drove down for some shopping at Las Americas Premium Outlets. Do not let the proximity to the US/Mexico border (it is literally the last exit before leaving the US) intimidate you! There are so many stores, the staff is super-friendly (and bilingual!) and there hasn’t been any border traffic any of the times I’ve been there.

8 hours,  5 stores, and many dollars (but less than a month’s rent) later, she came away with 9 pairs of shoes, 5 dresses, 19 tops/blouses, 3 blazers, 2 full suits, 5 cardigans, and 4 pairs of pants*. What can I say, we do good work! We also lots of quality gossip/eating/drinking time, and unfortunately I managed to accidentally delete most of my photos from the weekend, but here are the ones I still have! (P.S. for the rest of my photos, follow me on Instagram @evangelina !)

photo 2[blazer: Forever 21 (similar – expensive); blouse; Everly (in mint here); faux-leather pants: H&M; heels: Seychelles ‘Jump at the Chance’]

I wore this outfit to dinner at Searsucker on Saturday night. After shopping all day, we were super hungry (and running really late) so we weren’t too upset that the only reservation left was at 10pm! These Seychelles heels were a godsend after running around the outlets all day in my wedges!

For those of you who don’t watch Top Chef, Searsucker is one of Brian Malarkey’s (of season 3 fame) restaurants here in San Diego, and it’s wildly popular. The menu changes daily, but here’s a rundown of what we ate. Fair warning: we can EAT. Another warning: if you do not like loud noise, sideboob, DRUNK BROS YO, or searching for parking in order to avoid the $15 valet fee, go for lunch.

Drinks

Indian Summer: I only had a sip of A’s, and it was delicious! Freshly pressed apple juice, grey goose la poire, and leopold apple. I was terrified this would be too boozy (drinks that come in martini glasses intimidate me), so I didn’t order it but I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn’t too sweet, but the sip I had was tasty!

Skinny Jenny: their version of a Moscow Mule. House-made ginger beer, bitters, vodka, and lime. Insanely refreshing.

Bites

Cheddar Puffers: These are complimentary, and the little tin our server brought out was more than enough for us! They were really good – a little spicy, cheesy, and, true to their name, puffy!

Small Plates (This is where we did all the damage! For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a food-sharer, and a bad decider. I get anxiety when I have to choose a single entree for a meal, so I prefer to order lots of small plates and share with a fellow foodie.)

Scallop + Pork Belly Caramel: This was AMAZING. We didn’t really know what to expect, but the server recommended it, and we were not disappointed! It was a little spicy, a little salty, a little bit sweet, and the scallop was cooked perfectly. I’d definitely order this again.

Shrimp with Bacon Grits: Also cooked perfectly, and also a little spicy! This portion was pretty big – there were five shrimp, and a huge portion of grits.

Short Rib + Horseradish + Fried Onion: Another pretty big portion, and ridiculously delicious (are you seeing a theme??) The short rib was fork-tender, the onions perfectly crispy without being soggy/oily, and the flavors were balanced well.

Beef Tartare + Quail Egg + Taro Chip: I’m not going to lie, a huge part of what I liked about this dish was feeling like a giant when I picked up the tiiiiny quail egg to pour onto the tartare. (For those of you who don’t know, beef tartare is raw chopped/seasoned beef, and usually mixed with an egg yolk and traditionally served with toast points, or, in layman’s terms, “Beef Salsa^.”) This, in A’s assessment, could have used “a little more acid” but was also pretty good. The taro chips were a welcome change from the usually overly buttery/rich toast points that come with the dish.

Proscuitto with Blackberry, Arugula, and Burrata: This was a salad, and if I were eating here with people who hated sharing (or on a first date and wanted to look dainty) this is definitely the salad I’d get! It’s big enough for two to split, but only if they are ordering many more things (or have quail egg-sized stomachs!) There was a TON of proscuitto, and the burrata (a fresh Italian cheese, which is basically like eating A+++ mozzarella and cream) was to die for. Get this (unless you are vegan, in which case you need to check out my friend’s blog!)

Fried Brussels Sprouts with Walnuts: This is a side dish, but a really hearty serving of delicious fried veggies. I can’t remember what type of vinegar was on them (it wasn’t balsamic) but they were delicious as well.

Brie + Strawberry Compote: I don’t know if it was because we were super-full by this point, or just a little fatigued from all the rich food, but this wasn’t life-changing. I never hate brie, but I’d definitely skip this one and save room for some of the aforementioned superstars.

Duck Fat Fries + Tomato Jam: This was probably the major disappointment of the evening, and I think a huge part of it had to do with how overhyped it was on Yelp. Neither one of us could discern the flavor of duck fat (unlike the delicious duck fat fries at Sessions Public), and the fries were tossed in Parmsean and Bacon, which made them too salty. Skip these too, unless you’re dying to have fries (totally understandable, BTW. The heart wants what it wants.)

– Dessert

‘Shortbake’ with Strawberry Sorbet and Basil (something): OMG this was soooooo good! It was two pieces of shortbread-esque pastry (I say ‘esque’ because it wasn’t cooked crisp like the shortbreads I’ve had in my lifetime), a scoop of sorbet, and a smear of whipped basil cream. The components were good separately (the basil whip was a little overpowering alone) but together they were unstoppable. This is a seasonal dessert, but if it’s on the menu, YOU MUST EAT IT!

Doughnuts and Chocolate: I think we were literally the last table to order dessert, so I don’t know how accurate my review of this will be, since it might have been the end of the night, but these were not life-changing. The chocolate dipping sauce was cold, and the doughnut balls were really dense and tasted pretty oily. Hopefully they were just a victim of last-call blues, but I don’t think I’d order these again. To Searsucker’s credit, they initially told us the kitchen closes at 11, but still served us dessert when we ordered it at 12:30, so I can’t be too mad.

Long story short: the service was awesome, I’d definitely go back, and I think I gained ten pounds. However, this is exactly how we felt after dinner:

Stay tuned for the next installment, in which I horrify you with the amount of things I ate at Sunday brunch!

devil in a blue dress

Haha not really, but I adore this dress from the Gap, and it was 30% off during their Friends and Family event last weekend! Thankfully it was warm last Friday so I got to wear it out! I love the neckline:

photo 3[dress: Gap; sandals: Seychelles ‘Jump at the Chance’; watch: Nixon; lips: Stila Liquid Lipstick in ‘Fiore’]

I am obsessed with Stila’s Liquid Lipstick – if you read here regularly, you know that I rarely wear much makeup (other than my trusty eyebrow powder, otherwise I am Asian Whoopi Goldberg), but I do love a good punch of color on the lip. I’m always on the hunt for that perfect shade, but I hate having to reapply all day long, so this lipstick is perfect! I literally wore this lipstick all through dinner and it was STILL on at midnight when I finally crawled into bed! I love it so much I bought it in Beso (red) and Carina (coral). It’s certainly not for everyone, though – my friend didn’t like it because she thought it felt dry, and I guess if one is used to a creamy lipstick, then the long-lasting staining effect probably is jarring, but I’d say pop into your local Sephora and try it!

And now for photos of my cats:

photo 2[fatman watches law & order: svu]

Good old “SVU.” It’s the only show that I’ve probably seen every episode of, but will sit and watch a marathon every time it’s on USA. My boy cat loves it too. I think he’s an Olivia fan.

Hope your weekend was great!

dressing room diaries

Since I have very little extra spending money after buying the house, I’ve been trying on and waiting for sales!

Have you gotten anything good lately? Let me live vicariously through you!!

cheap and cheerful

This dress was $3.00 on clearance at Old Navy! It was on super-clearance, and then another 10% off when I pointed out there were belt loops, but no belt. I don’t consider myself a thrifty person, but I’m not a stupid person either :). This belt was also on clearance – I was expecting to pay $9.99 for it, but it rang up at $4.00. BO. NUS.

When I bought this dress, I wondered if I’d ever be able to wear it, since the cold snap seemed interminable, but earlier this week, the sun came back out and the air warmed up!

photo 1[headband: Anthropologie; dress: Old Navy; belt: Windsor; wedges: Mea Shadow; monogram pendant: Baublebar]

photo 2Confession: I immediately changed out of these wedges after I took this photo – I decided I’d rather wear leopard print flats instead! I also added my trusty denim jacket (which is splashed all over this blog) to keep me warm in the air conditioning. Yes,  we went from outside Arctic Tundra to indoor Arctic Tundra this week.

Peace,

derelicte!

I guess it’s no surprise that Zoolander is one of my favorite movies of all time. I’m also wary (yet excited) about the resurgence in 90s grunge fashion. I took baby steps at the mall on the day after Christmas:

photo 2[hat: H&M (similar); sweatshirt: Obey; jeans: American Eagle (similar); boots: Bamboo (similar)]

As you can tell, Fatman’s not so sure about this look either. I’ll admit it was super comfortable and I definitely felt better about the $40 version of these boots as opposed to the $100+ version I’ve also linked above! I’ll invest, but not in the hyper-trendy! I felt very “4 Non-Blondes” all day 🙂

p.s. Please ignore my pigsty of a room. I was on a post-vacation high!

a very merry recap

I just realized I haven’t posted since the beginning of the month! How rude of me. Here are some photos you may have missed if you don’t follow me on Instagram (@evangelinawoo).

1.  A gorgeous sunset a few days ago. It hardly ever rains in San Diego, but it feels like it’s been raining for the past month (exaggeration, I’m sure). It was nice to see the sun, and especially this pretty sunset!

photo 3[hat: Forever 21; sunnies: Mimi & Red; chambray: J.Crew; pants: Gap; bracelets: BaubleBar, Gorjana, T+J Designs; watch: Nordstrom]

2. Christmas Eve Warrior! This photo was taken in the dressing room of White House/Black Market. The little sequin chevron number brought me in, but alas, it was not to be. Way too long for short little me, and I wasn’t prepared to get it altered on such short notice. In case you want to take advantage of the sale and order online: it runs big!

photo 4[jacket: Urban Outfitters; dress: Target; boots: Via Spiga]

3. More dressing room fun at J.Crew! While I love this entire outfit, I didn’t get any of it! I think I had just hit the shopping wall at that point and couldn’t commit to either piece. Maybe it’s because it was so rainy and cold that I couldn’t wrap my mind around wearing bright colors ever again!

photo 5[sweater (similar)/jeans: J.Crew; watch: Nixon]

4. Friend time! Like I said, the sun came out just in time for my friend K’s visit to San Diego! She road-tripped it down from San Fran with her faithful dog, Dharma. This photo was taken post-hashbrown burrito coma so excuse our slightly dazed expressions. Dharma was all excitement, though! I think she was trying to get any residual scent of burrito off of me 🙂

photo 2[tiger tee: Forever 21]

Wishing you comfort and joy,

don’t mess with me

My friend told me that’s the vibe she gets from me in this jacket! Things also not to mess with: Texas, my man, the Zohan.

photo(174)[faux-leather sleeve jacket: Urban Outfitters; top: H&M; sequin leggings: Harijuku Mini for Target; ‘Viveca’ heels: Target]

Yes, you read that correctly. Those sequined leggings are from the kids department. Sometimes it pays to be short! I’m wearing them with the elastic cuff folded under in this photo. I love the idea of sequined leggings for New Years, but didn’t want to spend a ton of money on something I’ll likely only wear once, so these were perfect! For the taller ladies, here is a version by BCBG, sequined-front leggings from ASOS, and a under $100 version from Victoria’s Secret.

FYI these pumps come in several other color combinations here, including this adorable black glitter! I spotted them this weekend when I went to check out the Neiman Marcus + Target collaborations, and they just had to come home with me! The sole of the shoe is non-slip, which would be great for rainy days or slick floors! The best part about these shoes is that they are on sale in store for $28, as opposed to $32 online, so get out there! My store had plenty of colors and sizes left.

Happy December!

the last few days

Happy belated Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Small Business Saturday! Happy pre-Cyber Monday! Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday, but I must admit I’m getting a little fatigued with all of the shopping holidays that have popped up in the past few years! Not to say that I don’t love a bargain, but I don’t enjoy the hysteria, crowded parking lots, and I feel bad for the retail workers, especially at the H&M I went to on Friday – it looked like a war zone!

I spent the weekend in LA with my friends A and M, and their lovely dogs, Baxter and Rocky. Aren’t they handsome?

[Rocky]

[Baxter]

Saturday was Baxter’s birthday (the one-year anniversary of his adoption) so we celebrated by taking him and Rocky to the Lazy Dog Cafe, where they enjoyed bowls of hamburger, and bites of M’s french fries, sneaked to them under the table. They are such affectionate dogs, and I’m so happy to see they’ve found a great home! Baxter’s favorite thing to do is ride in the car; I got assigned to “Keep Baxter in the Car” duty.

[“We’re in the car!”]

We spent Thursday morning volunteering at the Bell Shelter with the Cheesecake Factory, since A is a server/expediter there. The shelter in Bell is one of the largest in Southern California, and provides a myriad of short-term and long-term services to people in need. We served meals of turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, and of course, CHEESECAKE, to hundreds of people, and I got to relive my waitressing days of running drinks, clearing dishes, and getting to know the residents at the shelter. Volunteers ranged from the very young to the very old from all of the Cheesecake Factory locations in the LA area, of all positions (line cooks, chefs, servers), and even a few Cheesecake “celebrities,” such as this guy:

[David Overton and a very sweaty me]

Read more about why he’s kind of a big deal here. He was incredibly personable, and actually approached me and said “Let’s take a photo” when he saw me checking my phone during some rare down time. Yes, I got to keep that t-shirt, and I also scored a free coffee mug and got to eat some good food while doing some good for the residents of the shelter.

After a post-volunteering nap, we headed over to M’s mom’s home for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. It’s so nice to spend time with my adopted LA family, and even better when I don’t have to cook! I’ll attempt Thanksgiving dinner some day, but not until I have a dining room table to share it!

I slept in on Black Friday, and took a nice long run through downtown Torrance, then met up with my friends N & Y (whose wedding I attended in Hawaii) for lunch at Wurstkurche in Venice. The restaurant specializes in sausages and craft beers, and my meal was delicious! I had the Austin Blues, with some fries obvi, but no beer, since I didn’t want to be TOO bloated for the shopping to come!

J.Crew had 25% off their entire store, and I snagged this adorable sweater, the Jules dress in retro jade, and the FACE Stockholm lipstick in French Martini. I’m obsessed with the Chili Flake color, and figured I’d try the other shade! I’ll let you know how it works out.

[intarsia sweater (not online!), heart blouse: J.Crew; denim: Paige; boots: Via Spiga]

Isn’t it cute? A legit way to acknowledge my inner cat-lady. FYI, this sweater runs kind of big, so I sized down.

Perhaps the best part of this weekend was watching the Notre Dame/USC game and watching my beloved Irish go 12-0 and head for the National Championship! I’ve been a fan ever since I set foot on that campus in 2001, and we’ve had good seasons and (LOTS OF) bad seasons, and it’s been so much fun to see them succeed! Onward to Miami and to victory!

Goooooooooo Irish! 🙂

…with the fur

A furry vest has been on my wishlist since last winter, but I kept balking at the price vs. quality until I snagged this one at the Mimi & Red sale last weekend! I sized up, so I could layer it over coats and chunky sweaters – hopefully it’s not too big!

[vest: BB Dakota (love this one!); top: Express (old); pants: BGBC (old); heels: J.Crew Mona]

Again, I apologize for the crazy expression on my face. Guess I’m just passionate about furry vests! I love the detailing on these pants – they’re a charcoal pinstripe with a sewn-in crease:

[details]

Speaking of fur,

maxi moment

My favorite boutique (Mimi & Red) had a huge sale this past Saturday! Even though I picked up a few things the week before, I couldn’t resist stopping in again, and I’m so glad I did, because I scored this gorgeous Everly maxi super-cheap! I was inspired by this post from Atlantic-Pacific’s Blair, but added a striped tank for a little fun, since my chambray is the same shade as my denim jacket.

[denim jacket: J.Crew Factory; tank: J.Crew; skirt: Everly (via Mimi & Red); sandals: Rainbow; sunnies: Elizabeth & James]

Here are some closeups of my accessories. Unfortunately, I think the look falls apart a little without the jacket…

[rings: T+J Designs, Stella & Dot, Madewell, Mimi & Red; bracelets: Stella & Dot, T+J Designs (reworked necklace); watch: Nixon; nails: OPI ‘Tease-y Does It”]

Happy Thanksgiving week, everyone!
